Kearsney Abbey

Kearsney Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian monastery founded in the 12th century. The remains of the abbey stand in a sheltered valley within Kearsney Abbey Park, surrounded by woodland and open grassland. The site includes the ruins of the church, domestic buildings and a range of stone walls that hint at the layout of monastic life.

The abbey ruin sits alongside the River Dour in a peaceful pastoral setting. You can walk around the remains and read interpretation boards explaining the monastic community that once lived here. The park itself offers excellent walking opportunities through mature woodland and along the river. Several trails of different lengths link the abbey with nearby Kearsney village and connect to wider footpath networks.

The site was eventually abandoned after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. Today it is a scheduled ancient monument and forms part of the historic heritage of the Dover area. The combination of architectural remains and natural landscape makes it a rewarding destination for walkers interested in medieval history and countryside exploration.
