About Herne Bay Pier
Herne Bay Pier is one of the few remaining Victorian piers on the English coast. Built in the 19th century, the original structure was damaged during World War II and has since been carefully restored. Today the pier extends into the sea and houses various attractions including amusement arcades, food outlets and seasonal entertainment venues. Walking the pier offers views back to the town and out across the Thames estuary.
The pier remains a working piece of seaside heritage, maintained as an operational attraction rather than a historical relic. It serves as a focal point for the seafront and reflects the tradition of British seaside entertainment that defined coastal resorts from the Victorian era onwards. The restoration work ensures visitors can experience the pier's character while enjoying modern facilities.
