About this attraction

About Forth Bridge, South Queensferry

The Forth Bridge is one of the greatest feats of Victorian engineering and one of Scotland's most celebrated landmarks. Opened in 1890, this cantilever railway bridge spans 2.5 kilometres across the Firth of Forth and carries the ScotRail main line between Edinburgh and Fife. Its three massive towers, each standing 110 metres above the water, support three cantilever spans using an innovative structural principle that was revolutionary at the time.

The bridge's distinctive red colour, the distinctive silhouette created by its double cantilever arms, and its position straddling the estuary have made it instantly recognisable worldwide. The structure required eight years and the lives of 57 workers to complete. In 2015, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding engineering significance and architectural merit. The railway continues to carry thousands of passengers daily, and the bridge remains essential infrastructure for Scotland's transport network.

From the shore at South Queensferry, the bridge presents a magnificent prospect from multiple angles. Visitors can walk along the waterfront at Hawes Pier or view it from the Fife coastline. The journey across the bridge by train offers a thrilling passage high above the firth. The engineering elegance, historic importance, and iconic status combine to make the Forth Bridge an unmissable sight for anyone interested in Scottish heritage and Victorian achievement.
