Faversham Guildhall and Market Place

Faversham's Market Place has been at the heart of the town for centuries, hosting the weekly market and serving as the civic centre. The Grade I listed Guildhall, a red-brick building dating from 1574, dominates the square and remains one of Kent's finest examples of Tudor architecture. The building features characteristic Flemish and English period details, with tall gable ends and a striking entrance.

The Market Place itself is lined with historic Georgian and Victorian shopfronts, creating a characterful shopping area. On market days (typically Tuesday, Friday and Saturday) the square fills with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to crafts. The Guildhall continues to serve as a community building, hosting exhibitions, concerts and local events. The whole area gives a sense of Faversham's long history as a prosperous market town and port, particularly its prosperity from the 16th century onwards. You can easily explore the Market Place on foot, combining a visit with the numerous pubs, cafes and independent shops that surround it.
