Denge Sound Mirrors

Denge Sound Mirrors are three massive concrete structures located on Romney Marsh near Dungeness, built in the 1920s and 1930s as an experimental acoustic detection system. Before radar technology became reliable, the British military attempted to use curved concrete walls that could focus and amplify the sound of approaching aircraft engines, allowing operators to determine the direction and altitude of threats. The largest mirror measures over 60 metres across.

Today, the mirrors stand as unusual relics of early 20th-century military engineering. Two of the three structures survive in accessible condition; the third was damaged during World War II but parts remain visible. The site is open to the public and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of air defence technology and the ingenuity of engineers working with pre-radar methods. The exposed Marsh setting means the structures are visible from considerable distances, creating a striking silhouette against the landscape.
