About Cliftonville
Cliftonville is Margate's quieter eastern seafront neighbourhood, stretching along the coast from the main town centre eastward. It's characterised by broad, tree-lined streets of handsome Victorian and Edwardian villas and guest houses, many overlooking the sea. The beaches here are less crowded than the main sands, and the whole area has a more settled, residential feel compared to the arcade-and-funfair atmosphere of the town centre.
You'll find a sequence of small beaches and coves, backed by striped bathing huts and a gentler seafront promenade. The roads inland rise in tiers up the cliff, with viewpoints and green spaces dotted throughout. Cliftonville's attractions are more about the setting than specific sites: the period architecture, the quieter beaches, the sense of a proper seaside suburb with independent cafes, tea rooms, and small shops serving locals rather than purely tourists.
It's an easy walk along the seafront from the main sands, or a few minutes by car. The area is good for those seeking a less frenetic beach experience or a base for exploring the wider Margate coastline.
