Canterbury City Walls

Canterbury's medieval city walls are among the most substantial and well-preserved in England, forming an almost complete circuit around the historic core of the city. The walls were primarily built during the Norman and medieval periods, incorporating some Roman stone and foundations. They originally enclosed the cathedral precinct and the commercial and residential centre of the medieval city. The walls stood as vital defensive fortifications for centuries, with gates (now mostly gone but their locations still marked) controlling entry to the city. Much of the wall survives today, with substantial sections visible from both inside and outside, making them a defining feature of Canterbury's townscape.

One of the principal pleasures of visiting Canterbury is walking along the accessible sections of the walls, which provide elevated views over the medieval streets, cathedral gardens, and the surrounding modern city. A circuit walk around the surviving sections takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your pace and how often you stop to explore gateways, bastions, and viewpoints. The wall walks offer a distinctive perspective on the city's layout and history, and are particularly atmospheric at sunset. Key sections are signposted from the city centre, and the walks are suitable for most visitors, though some sections involve steps and uneven surfaces. The walls are especially evocative where they pass through parks and quieter areas north and east of the cathedral.
