130 Twydall – Rainham – Hempstead Valley – Bredhurst – Maidstone

The 130 is one of those quietly rewarding local services that links two very different worlds: the dense Medway suburbs around Twydall and Rainham, and the historic county town of Maidstone, by way of a surprisingly green stretch of the North Downs. Operated by Nu-Venture, it begins at Twydall Shops, threading through the post-war estates of Begonia Avenue and Hawthorne Avenue before turning south past the Pump Lane roundabout.

Through Rainham the bus picks up the rhythm of a working high street, calling near the White Horse and the parade of shops around Holding Street, then climbing gently into Meresborough and Parkwood. The houses thin and the gardens grow longer; you catch glimpses of the Medway Towns falling away behind, with the Isle of Sheppey just visible on a clear day from the higher ground around Wigmore.

Wigmore itself is a long, comfortable village stop, the bus pausing near the Queen's Head, the Smallholders Club and the Spyglass and Kettle before swinging into Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre. From here the journey changes character completely. Beyond Kenyon Walk and Fowler Close the road narrows into proper Kentish lanes, dipping through Bredhurst with its little primary school and flint-walled cottages, then on to Boxley, where the Kings Arms sits below the chalk scarp of the North Downs. The view opens out across the Len Valley, with hop fields, orchards and the spire of Boxley church framed by woodland.

Descending through Penenden Heath, the bus calls at the parade of shops and rolls past the Dog and Gun before joining the busy approaches to Maidstone. There is a brief town-centre loop taking in Maidstone East station, St Faith's Street, the Cannon, King Street and the Royal Star Arcade, and a short run down to Maidstone West station beside the River Medway. The return leg retraces the route back over the downs to Twydall, giving riders a second chance at the Boxley views in the opposite light.

It is an unfussy bus, but a genuinely useful and pretty one: a single ticket joins riverside Maidstone, a major out-of-town shopping centre, downland villages and the Medway estates in a single, looping ride.

The 130 makes an unusually varied day out for a local bus, stitching together a major Medway shopping centre, a North Downs village walk and a proper riverside afternoon in Maidstone, all from a standing start at Twydall Shops.

Begin in Rainham, hopping off near the White Horse to wander the older part of the village around St Margaret's Church, a handsome flint building with medieval origins set back from the main road. There is a cluster of independent cafes and bakeries along the High Street for a first coffee before you rejoin the bus.

A few stops later, Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre is the obvious place to stretch your legs if you fancy a browse: a large covered mall with the usual high-street names, a sizeable food court and easy step-free access straight from the bus stop. It works well as a rainy-day backup if the downs are looking damp.

For walkers, the stops at Bredhurst and Boxley are the prize. Bredhurst Woods, managed by the Woodland Trust, has gentle waymarked paths through ancient hornbeam and sweet chestnut, and from Boxley you can pick up footpaths to the foot of the North Downs Way with views back across the Medway gap. The Kings Arms at Boxley is a classic village pub for a slow lunch.

Back on the bus, Penenden Heath drops you near the open common, and a short ride further brings you into central Maidstone. Get off at Brenchley Gardens or St Faith's Street for the Maidstone Museum, with its surprisingly rich Egyptian and Japanese collections, and for the medieval Archbishop's Palace beside the River Medway. From the palace it is a short stroll along the towpath to the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages, housed in the old Archbishop's stables.

Finish with a riverside drink at one of the pubs by Maidstone Bridge, or take a short walk up the High Street to the Royal Star Arcade for tea before catching the 130 back over the downs to Twydall. Done well, it is a full and very Kentish day for the price of a single bus fare.
