Boxley Village, Maidstone

Boxley is a charming Kentish village located in the shadow of the North Downs, with a settlement history extending back to Anglo-Saxon times. The village is most famous for the substantial remains of Boxley Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century, which dominated village life for over 400 years until its dissolution in the 16th century. The abbey ruins remain a striking feature of the landscape, managed as a heritage site and visible from footpaths in the surrounding area.

The village itself retains much of its traditional character, with period properties clustered around the parish church of St. Mary and Martin. The surrounding countryside provides excellent walking opportunities, with the North Downs Way and numerous local footpaths offering routes through chalk grassland and woodland. Boxley is particularly popular with walkers tackling the longer North Downs route, offering a natural stopping point and village facilities.

The village remains accessible via the 130 bus route and serves as a gateway to the rural attractions of the mid-Medway area, lying approximately halfway between Rainham and Maidstone town centre.
