Victorian Grand Arcade

The Grand Arcade is one of the finest surviving Victorian shopping arcades in Yorkshire, tucked between New Briggate and Vicar Lane in the centre of Leeds. Opened in 1897 and designed by Smith and Tweedale, it was built at the height of the city's late Victorian commercial boom, when covered arcades offered shoppers an elegant escape from the soot and weather of the industrial streets outside.

Step inside and the arcade reveals a slender, three-storey passage lined with shopfronts, decorative tilework and a glazed roof that floods the interior with daylight. The standout feature is the Potts of Leeds animated clock above the New Briggate entrance, which strikes on the hour with a procession of mechanical figures including a Scotsman, an Irishman, an Englishman and a Canadian, a charmingly eccentric piece of late Victorian craftsmanship.

Today the arcade houses a mix of independent boutiques, barbers, cafés and specialist shops, sitting within the wider Leeds arcade quarter alongside the Victoria, Cross and County arcades. It is a short walk from Leeds Grand Theatre, the Corn Exchange and the city's main shopping streets, making it an easy stop on any cultural wander through the city centre.
