Tenterden Town Hall

Tenterden Town Hall stands on the north side of the High Street, a compact red-brick Georgian building dating from 1792. It replaced an earlier timber-framed hall and has served as the seat of local government for the town ever since. The building is Grade II listed and remains the meeting place of Tenterden Town Council.

The exterior is modest but pleasing: sash windows, a central doorway beneath a small pediment, and a clock. Inside, the council chamber holds the town's civic regalia, including maces and mayoral chains that reflect Tenterden's long-standing status as a Limb of the Cinque Port of Rye, a link that gave the town unusual maritime privileges in the medieval period.

The Town Hall sits at the heart of the conservation area, surrounded by weatherboarded and tile-hung houses. It's a good starting point for a wander along the High Street, with St Mildred's Church a short walk to the east.
