2 Ashford – Tenterden

The Stagecoach South East 2 links Ashford with the handsome Wealden town of Tenterden, threading through a string of classic Kent villages before looping back via Willesborough and the William Harvey Hospital. It's an unhurried run through orchard country, hop-fields and weatherboarded high streets, and one of the most rewarding ways to see the southern Weald without a car.

Setting off from Ashford Park Street, the bus calls at County Square and Ashford International station before threading through South Ashford, passing the Designer Outlet on its way out of town. Once clear of the suburbs the landscape opens up: hedged lanes, gentle ridges and the occasional glimpse of an oast-house cowl as the bus rolls into Great Chart, where the church and the Swan and Dog mark the heart of the village.

From Great Chart the road runs west through Bethersden, a long, linear village of tile-hung cottages and the well known George inn. The route then climbs gently to High Halden, with its distinctive shingled church spire visible above the trees, before dropping into St Michaels and the outskirts of Tenterden itself.

Tenterden is the showpiece of the journey. The broad, tree-lined High Street is one of the finest in Kent, with Georgian frontages, independent shops and the white weatherboarded Town Hall. The bus pauses near the Vine and the Town Hall stops, giving easy access to the town centre and to the Kent and East Sussex Railway, whose terminus sits just down the hill at Tenterden Town Station.

Beyond Tenterden the 2 makes a charming detour to Rolvenden, calling at the KESR's Rolvenden Station (home to the railway's workshops) before turning at Monypenny and retracing its steps. The return leg back through High Halden, Bethersden and Great Chart offers the same scenery from a fresh angle, with low afternoon light often catching the oasts and pasture along the way.

On reaching Ashford the bus continues out via Wellesley Road and the Norton Knatchbull School to Willesborough, finishing at the William Harvey Hospital. It's a useful tail-end for residents, but for visitors the real journey is everything west of Ashford: a quiet, comfortable hour through some of the most characterful corners of the Kent Weald.

A day out on the 2 works beautifully as a slow tour of the Kent Weald, starting from Ashford Park Street or, for rail visitors, picking the bus up at Ashford International. Grab a coffee in County Square before heading west; the journey is gentle enough to enjoy from the top of a window seat with a book in your bag.

As the bus arrives at Great Chart, it's worth noting the long, low village street with its medieval St Mary's Church and the timber-framed Court Lodge nearby. If you have time on the return, hop off for a short stroll around the churchyard, which has fine views back across the fields towards Ashford.

Continuing on, you reach Bethersden, famous historically for 'Bethersden marble', a fossil-rich limestone used in Canterbury Cathedral. The George is a classic Kent village pub for a mid-morning stop, and the parish church of St Margaret sits just off the main road.

High Halden follows, with its remarkable 14th-century timber-framed bell tower at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, one of the most striking pieces of medieval carpentry in the county. It's a quick photo stop if you're hopping between buses.

The main event is Tenterden. Spend the bulk of your day here: wander the wide High Street, browse the independent shops and the antique dealers, and pause at one of the tea rooms or the White Lion for lunch. The Tenterden and District Museum, tucked behind the High Street, tells the story of the town's wool and Cinque Ports past. From the Town Hall stop it's a short walk down Station Road to Tenterden Town Station, the headquarters of the Kent and East Sussex Railway, where heritage steam trains run through the Rother Valley to Bodiam.

If you prefer to stay with the bus, ride on to Rolvenden, where the KESR's locomotive workshops are based at Rolvenden Station. The village itself, a little further up the hill, has a long green flanked by white weatherboarded houses and the part-Norman St Mary the Virgin church, plus the C.M. Booth Collection of Historic Vehicles for the curious.

Catch the bus back through the same villages in the soft afternoon light and you'll have packed a full day of Wealden scenery, heritage railway and country pub culture into a single Stagecoach ticket.
