West Malling High Street Historic Buildings

West Malling's High Street is one of the best-preserved small-town streets in Kent, running between the ruined tower of St Leonard's at one end and the entrance to St Mary's Abbey at the other. The street is lined with a near-continuous run of listed buildings, from timber-framed cottages and Georgian brick townhouses to a scattering of Victorian shopfronts, and much of the town centre is a designated conservation area.

Highlights along the walk include the Swan Inn and other coaching-era pubs, the Cascade at the lower end where water from the abbey grounds tumbles under the road, and the Old Fire Station. Independent shops, delicatessens, cafes and antique dealers occupy most of the ground floors, giving the street a busy but small-scale feel that has changed little in outline since the 18th century.

It is an easy 15-minute stroll from top to bottom, with plenty of side lanes worth exploring. The market cross and war memorial sit near the middle, and there are benches for a pause. West Malling railway station is a short walk away, and the 77 bus stops on the High Street itself.
