Linton

Linton, sometimes called Linton-in-Craven to distinguish it from other Lintons, is a small and exceptionally picturesque village in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, lying just across the River Wharfe from its larger neighbour Grassington. Stone cottages cluster around a sloping village green, where a beck runs over a series of small bridges including a clapper bridge, a packhorse bridge, a road bridge and stepping stones, all within a few yards of each other.

The Fountaine Inn anchors one side of the green, while the almshouses opposite, known as Fountaine's Hospital, are an elegant early 18th-century group attributed by tradition to the influence of Vanbrugh or Wren. A short walk down the lane leads to Linton Falls, a series of dramatic stepped waterfalls on the Wharfe overlooked by a small hydroelectric scheme that revived the site's old mill heritage.

Linton sits on the Dales Way long-distance path and makes a quiet starting point for walks across the river to Grassington, up onto Grass Wood, or downstream to Burnsall. With its compact size and easy access from Grassington's bus services, it is a popular stop for walkers and day visitors exploring Wharfedale.
