About Halifax

Halifax, located in West Yorkshire, UK, is a historic market town with a rich industrial heritage, striking architecture, and a vibrant cultural scene. Once a powerhouse of the woollen textile industry, Halifax played a key role in the Industrial Revolution and retains many impressive Victorian and Georgian buildings that reflect its prosperous past.

One of the town’s crown jewels is The Piece Hall, a Grade I listed building originally opened in 1779 as a cloth hall where handwoven woollen cloth was traded. After a major restoration, it now serves as a stunning cultural and retail space, housing independent shops, cafés, galleries, and hosting events, markets, and live performances in its grand open-air courtyard.

Halifax is also home to the Bankfield Museum, which tells the story of the town’s textile heritage, and Shibden Hall, a beautifully preserved 15th-century manor house. Shibden was the home of Anne Lister, a 19th-century diarist and landowner whose life inspired the BBC/HBO series Gentleman Jack. The hall and surrounding Shibden Park are popular visitor attractions, offering historical insight and scenic walks.

The town centre is full of character, with cobbled streets, classic pubs, and modern restaurants. The Halifax Borough Market, with its ornate Victorian architecture and glass roof, is a bustling place to explore local produce, crafts, and food.

Halifax also boasts a strong educational and engineering legacy. It was once home to Crossley Carpets, one of the world’s largest carpet manufacturers, and the Halifax Building Society, which helped define the British financial landscape in the 20th century.

For families, Eureka! The National Children’s Museum is a standout attraction, offering interactive learning experiences for children of all ages.

Surrounded by the rolling hills of the South Pennines, Halifax is ideal for walkers and nature lovers, with nearby trails, parks, and moorland.

With its blend of industrial history, cultural richness, and stunning architecture, Halifax is a fascinating and evolving town that continues to honour its past while embracing the future.
