Grindleford

Grindleford is a small Peak District village set in the wooded Derwent Valley, between the dramatic gritstone edges of Froggatt and the broad sweep of farmland leading towards Hathersage. The village straddles the river crossed by a handsome stone bridge, and is a popular starting point for walkers heading into the surrounding countryside.

The area's best known landmark is the Grindleford Station Café, a no-frills institution housed in the former stationmaster's house at the mouth of the Totley Tunnel. Generations of walkers have refuelled there on mugs of tea and chip butties after tackling Padley Gorge, the steep, mossy ravine that climbs through ancient oak woodland up to Burbage Moor. The gorge is among the most atmospheric short walks in the Peak District, with tumbling water, lichen-covered boulders and rich birdlife.

Grindleford has its own station on the Hope Valley Line between Sheffield and Manchester, making it one of the most accessible Peak District villages by public transport. From here, walkers can step almost directly onto the paths leading to Froggatt Edge, Longshaw Estate, and the wider moorland network around the upper Derwent.
