Great Hucklow

Great Hucklow is a small, tucked-away village in the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park, lying on a limestone shelf above the Hope Valley between Tideswell and Bradwell. With its scattering of stone cottages, a chapel and a single pub, the village has retained a peaceful, agricultural character that contrasts with the more visited Peak District honeypots.

The surrounding landscape carries deep traces of Derbyshire's lead-mining past. Grassed-over spoil heaps, capped shafts and old miners' tracks criss-cross the fields, and the village itself grew up around this industry from medieval times into the 19th century. Today the area is better known for its position on the edge of Hucklow Edge, a broad limestone escarpment that draws walkers for the wide views across the Hope Valley to Win Hill and the dark gritstone moors beyond.

The high ground above the village is home to the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club, whose long-running airfield makes use of the reliable ridge lift along the Edge; on clear weekends the sky is dotted with sailplanes. Great Hucklow makes a good base for quiet walks to neighbouring Foolow, Eyam and Bretton, and for the climb up to the trig point on Hucklow Edge.
