About Grimsby Fishermen's Heritage Museum

The Grimsby Fishermen's Heritage Museum sits within the Fishing Heritage Centre on Alexandra Dock, telling the story of the men and women who built Grimsby into the world's largest fishing port during the mid twentieth century. The museum focuses on the lived experience of the distant water trawlermen who sailed to the Arctic grounds off Iceland, Greenland and the White Sea, returning with cod and haddock that fed much of Britain.

Visitors are immersed in a recreated 1950s trawler, the Ross Tiger, with cramped bunks, the galley, the engine room and the wheelhouse all faithfully reproduced. Period sound effects, oral history recordings from former skippers and deckhands, and recreated dockside streets convey the noise, smell and danger of life on a sidewinder bound for the fishing grounds. Berthed alongside is the real Ross Tiger, a 1957 working trawler, available to tour with a former trawlerman as guide.

The exhibits also cover the wider community, from the Kasbah dockside warehouses to the fish merchants and the families left behind. Together they form one of the most evocative records of a now vanished British industry, set within Grimsby's regenerated waterfront close to the marina and the town centre.
