Fleetwood Museum

Fleetwood Museum occupies a handsome Grade II listed former Custom House on Queen's Terrace, overlooking the mouth of the River Wyre. Run by Lancashire County Council and a team of dedicated local volunteers, it tells the story of the town that Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood founded in the 1830s as a planned new port and seaside resort, designed by the celebrated architect Decimus Burton.

Inside, displays trace Fleetwood's heyday as one of the most important deep-sea trawling ports in Europe, with photographs, models and personal accounts from the families whose lives revolved around the fishing fleet. Visitors can step aboard the wheelhouse of a Fleetwood trawler, learn about the dangers faced by crews on Icelandic waters, and explore galleries on the salt trade, the railway, the lifeboat service and the development of the resort.

The museum also looks after the historic inshore fishing boat Harriet, moored nearby in the dock, which can sometimes be visited as part of special events. With its waterfront location close to the ferry to Knott End, the Marsh Mill area and Fleetwood's tram terminus, it is a natural stop on any visit to this distinctive Fylde Coast town.
