About Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, Halifax
Eureka! The National Children’s Museum is a one-of-a-kind, interactive educational attraction located in Halifax, West Yorkshire, designed especially for children aged 0–11. Opened in 1992, Eureka! was the UK’s first fully interactive museum for kids, and it continues to be a leading destination for families seeking fun, hands-on learning experiences.
Unlike traditional museums where exhibits are often kept behind glass, Eureka! invites children to touch, play, experiment, and explore. Its mission is to inspire curiosity and learning through play, helping children to better understand the world around them. The museum features over 400 interactive exhibits spread across several themed zones, each focused on different aspects of everyday life, science, and creativity.
One of the most popular areas is “All About Me”, a gallery that explores the human body, health, and emotions. Kids can scan their bodies, explore how their senses work, and learn about different organs through fun, digital and physical activities. There’s even a talking robot that helps children understand how their minds and bodies function.
Another favourite is the “Living & Working Together” gallery, where children can role-play in a child-sized town complete with a bank, supermarket, post office, and garage. This imaginative play helps develop social, numeracy, and problem-solving skills in a way that feels like pure fun.
The “Spark Gallery” is a newer addition and features seasonal exhibitions, creative workshops, and art installations designed to inspire innovation and critical thinking. Outdoor play areas and picnic spaces provide a chance to unwind between exhibits.
Eureka! also caters exceptionally well to children with additional needs, offering sensory-friendly sessions, accessible facilities, and a welcoming, inclusive environment.
The museum is located next to Halifax railway station, making it easily accessible for visitors from across the UK. It also includes a café, gift shop, and baby-friendly facilities.
Over the years, Eureka! has welcomed millions of families and school groups, becoming a beloved institution that proves learning doesn’t have to be boring. With its emphasis on discovery, creativity, and child-led exploration, Eureka! is more than a museum, it’s a vibrant, playful space where imagination and education go hand in hand.
