Elm Hill, Norwich

Elm Hill is a narrow cobbled lane winding down from St Peter Hungate towards Tombland in the centre of Norwich. Most of the timber-framed and pantiled buildings you see today date from the years following the great fire of 1507, which destroyed much of the street. Rebuilt in Tudor style and largely spared by later development, it is now one of the most complete medieval streets in England.

Walking the lane takes only a few minutes, but there is plenty to slow you down. The Britons Arms, at the top of the hill, is a thatched merchant's house dating from around 1420 and one of the few buildings to survive the fire. Further along you'll pass independent shops selling antiques, secondhand books, teddy bears, board games and handmade crafts, along with cafes and a tea room. A single plane tree on the small central square marks the spot where the elm that gave the street its name once stood.

Elm Hill has been used as a filming location for period dramas including Stardust and The Personal History of David Copperfield. From the foot of the hill it's a short walk to Norwich Cathedral, Tombland and the market, making it an easy stop on any wander through the old city.
