About this attraction

About Pavilion Theatre, Gorleston

The Pavilion Theatre sits on the clifftop at Gorleston-on-Sea, looking out over the wide sandy beach and the mouth of the River Yare. Built in 1901 as part of the Edwardian development of Gorleston as a seaside resort, the timber-framed building has served as a variety theatre, cinema, and community venue across its long life, and remains one of the most recognisable landmarks along the Gorleston seafront.

Inside, the auditorium retains an intimate feel, with seating on a single raked floor giving good sightlines from almost every seat. The programme runs year-round and typically includes tribute concerts, stand-up comedy, drama, children's shows during school holidays, and a traditional pantomime over the Christmas season. Local amateur dramatic and operatic societies also stage regular productions here, so the mix leans towards accessible, family-friendly entertainment rather than experimental work.

The setting is a large part of the appeal. The Pavilion stands directly above the Lower Esplanade, so a visit combines easily with a walk along the promenade, fish and chips on the seafront, or time on the Blue Flag beach below. Free parking is usually available on the clifftop nearby, and Gorleston town centre is a short walk inland for cafes and shops before or after a performance.
