X29 Norwich – Drayton – Fakenham

The X29 Yellow Line is one of the most rewarding cross-country rides in Norfolk, threading the whole width of the county between Norwich and Fakenham. It leaves the city from St Stephens Street, sweeping past the flint walls of Norwich Castle on its mound and the medieval huddle of Tombland, where the Cathedral spire briefly fills the top-deck window.

Beyond Anglia Square the bus climbs out through the northern suburbs, past Wensum Park and the long straight of Aylsham Road, then eases into Hellesdon. Semi-detached villas give way to the greens and playing fields that mark the edge of the built-up area, and by the time the bus reaches Drayton, with its Tesco and the old Cock Inn on the corner, the character has already softened into something more village-like.

Taverham follows in a long ribbon of leafy avenues before the route drops down to Attlebridge and crosses the River Wensum for the first time. From here the X29 settles into the rhythm of the Wensum valley: hedged lanes, big Norfolk skies, and flint-and-brick villages strung out along the old Fakenham turnpike. Morton on the Hill, Weston Longville and Lenwade slip by, the last a former mill village where the river runs close to the road.

Sparham, Bawdeswell and Foxley bring a run of quiet greens, thatched cottages and roadside churches, while Bintree and Guist mark the approach to the higher, more open farmland of north Norfolk. A short stretch beyond Stibbard, the bus pulls in at Pensthorpe, home to the Waterfowl Park and famous as the location used for the BBC's Springwatch broadcasts.

The final descent into Fakenham is a proper reveal: the town's Georgian rooftops and the tall tower of the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul appearing above the trees. The bus works its way through the outskirts before terminating on Oak Street, a short stroll from the cobbled Market Place, the independent shops of Bridge Street, and the walking trails along the Wensum. It is a long, unhurried ride, and one that trades city bustle for one of Norfolk's most characteristic river valleys.

The X29 makes an excellent one-bus day out from Norwich, trading the city for the flint villages of the Wensum valley and the market-town charm of Fakenham. Board at St Stephens Street and settle in for a slow, scenic run northwest, ideally on the top deck for the best views over the hedges.

Before you set off, it is worth taking half an hour around Norwich Castle and the neighbouring lanes of Tombland and Elm Hill, one of the most complete medieval streets in England. A coffee at one of the independent cafes on Wensum Street sets you up for the journey ahead.

As the bus reaches Drayton, look out for the Marriott's Way, a former railway line now used as a walking and cycling trail that shadows the X29's route much of the way to Themelthorpe. Keen walkers sometimes ride out to Lenwade and walk a section back.

Alighting at Pensthorpe, adj Waterfowl Park, you can spend several unhurried hours at Pensthorpe Natural Park, wandering the wildflower meadows, Millennium Garden designed by Piet Oudolf, and hides overlooking the lakes. The cafe here does generous lunches and the play barns make it a genuinely family-friendly stop.

Back on the bus for a short hop into Fakenham, the terminus at Oak Street puts you within a few minutes' walk of the Market Place, where a general market has been held since the Middle Ages. Have a look at the flint-built Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul with its splendid perpendicular tower, then browse the independent shops along Bridge Street and Norwich Street. The Museum of Gas and Local History, housed in the old town gasworks, is a genuinely unusual small museum.

For lunch or tea, Fakenham has a good choice of pubs and cafes around the Market Place. If time allows, follow the riverside path along the Wensum for a gentle stroll before catching the X29 back to Norwich, watching the same Wensum valley villages slip past in the soft evening light.
