The Pavilion Theatre, Gorleston

The Pavilion Theatre sits on the clifftop at Gorleston-on-Sea, looking out over the sandy bay and the mouth of the River Yare. Built in 1901 in the Edwardian seaside style, its white-painted frontage and green domed roof have been a familiar sight to holidaymakers for well over a century. The building has served the town as a concert hall, cinema and repertory theatre at various points in its long history.

Today the venue runs a mixed programme of live entertainment across a roughly 300-seat auditorium. Expect touring comedians, tribute bands, musicals, children's shows during the school holidays and the traditional summer variety season that Gorleston is known for. The theatre also stages an annual pantomime each winter, a fixture on the local calendar.

The Pavilion's setting is part of the appeal. It stands beside the Lower Esplanade and the model yacht pond, a short walk from Gorleston beach and the harbour mouth where you can watch ships heading in and out of Great Yarmouth. Combined with the town's traditional seafront cafes and gardens, an evening show here fits neatly into a wider day at the coast.
