Acomb Village Green

Acomb sits on the hillside a couple of miles north of Hexham, a compact stone-built village strung along a single main street with a small green at its heart. The green is a quiet, unfussy space, ringed by traditional cottages and giving views out across the Tyne Valley towards Hexham and the hills beyond.

The village itself grew up around lead mining and quarrying in earlier centuries, and much of the original 18th and 19th-century character remains in the buildings around the green. Two long-standing pubs, the Miners Arms and the Sun Inn, stand nearby, both well used by walkers coming off the local footpaths.

Acomb makes a natural pause on the 680 bus route between Hexham and Bellingham. From the green you can pick up quiet lanes and paths heading down to the River Tyne or up onto the higher ground towards Hadrian's Wall, which lies only a short distance to the north. It is more a place to stretch your legs and look at the view than a formal attraction, but it captures the feel of a working Northumberland village.
