Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

Berwick Museum and Art Gallery occupies part of the historic Berwick Barracks and tells the story of the town's turbulent past, its industries and its people. Berwick famously changed hands between England and Scotland more than a dozen times in the medieval period, and the displays draw out that border identity through archaeology, everyday objects and reconstructions.

The gallery is particularly notable for holding a selection of works from the collection of the Glaswegian shipping magnate Sir William Burrell, who donated pieces to Berwick in the 1940s. Visitors can see paintings, ceramics, glass and sculpture, including works by Degas among others, in a purpose-built display room known as the 'Window on Burrell's Berwick'.

Local history exhibits include salmon fishing on the Tweed, the town's role as a garrison, and the coming of the railway across the Royal Border Bridge. The museum is compact and can be combined comfortably with the other attractions at the Barracks and a walk along the Elizabethan ramparts.
