175 Gillingham King Street – Medway Maritime Hospital – Chatham

The 175 is one of Medway's most useful local loops, beginning and ending at Gillingham King Street and tying together the residential heart of Gillingham with the Medway Maritime Hospital and the buzzing centre of Chatham. From Stop A on King Street, the bus sets off past the parade of independent shops, cafes and the familiar red-brick terraces that give central Gillingham its compact, friendly character.

The route soon passes St Mark's Church, an unmissable landmark at the corner of Canterbury Street, before swinging towards Copenhagen Road and on past The Westcourt Arms. This is classic suburban Kent: long rows of bay-fronted Edwardian houses, corner shops, and the occasional glimpse of green between the rooftops. The mood is workaday rather than postcard, but it's the real, lived-in Medway.

A key stop comes outside Medway Maritime Hospital, the area's main acute hospital and a daily destination for thousands of staff, patients and visitors. The 175 is a genuine lifeline here, which is part of what makes this loop interesting; it does the everyday work of connecting people to the places they actually need to reach.

From the hospital the bus heads through the streets around Byron Road and Rock Avenue, dipping into Chatham past Windmill Road and Institute Road. There's a gentle change in tone as you cross from Gillingham into Chatham proper, with views opening towards the Medway valley and the distinctive skyline of the dockyard town. The bus pulls into Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, set right beside the river with the Pentagon Centre and The Brook close at hand.

After a pause at the Waterfront, the 175 turns for home, retracing its path back past the Brook, Institute Road and Windmill Road. The return leg crosses Rock Avenue, slips past Byron Road and the hospital once again, then heads back through Copenhagen Road and St Mark's towards Jeffery Street and finally King Street. It's a short loop but a genuinely useful one, and a good way for a visitor to get a feel for everyday Medway away from the tourist trail.
