About this journey

A circular neighbourhood route from Chatham Waterfront up through Luton and around the wooded Lordswood and Walderslade estates.

Journey overview

The 166 is one of those resolutely local routes that turns out to be surprisingly scenic, mostly because of the way it climbs. From Stop A1 at Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, the bus pulls out beside the tidal Medway, with the cranes and quayside of the Universities at Medway visible across the water, and almost immediately tilts upward past Upbury Way and into the streets of Luton.

This is old Chatham, the dense, hilly hinterland that grew up behind the dockyard. The bus threads between rows of brick terraces, past Bank Street, Castle Road and Albany Road, with quick glimpses down side streets towards the river and the chalk cliffs of Fort Pitt. Luton Junior School marks the point where the gradient really bites; the engine drops a gear, the rooftops of Chatham fall away behind, and on a clear day you can pick out the Hoo Peninsula on the horizon.

Past the Hen and Chickens pub the route reaches Upper Luton Road and the landscape shifts. Suddenly there are hedges, verges and the first proper trees as the bus enters Lordswood at North Dane Way. The estate was laid out in the 1970s on the high ground south of Chatham, and the road layout is generous, looping, and full of birch, oak and rowan. Princes Park comes next, with its own little parade of shops, a Morrisons, and the sweep round Maundene School.

From here the 166 takes on the character of a proper neighbourhood ramble, dipping into Walderslade via Downland Walk and Scotby Avenue, then climbing again past Lordswood School and the Kestrel Shopping Centre. The names alone tell you something about the setting: Copper Tree Walk, Autumn Glade, Golden Wood Close, Timber Tops. The houses sit back behind grass banks and the bus often has glimpses across to the dark line of the North Downs and the woodland of Boxley Warren beyond.

After looping around Lordswood Close, the high point of the route, the bus retraces a slightly different path back through Walderslade and Princes Park, returning down the long descent through Luton with Chatham spread out below. The final stops are at Chatham Railway Station and then back to the Waterfront, completing a circuit that, for the price of a single fare, gives you a proper tour of the Medway hills behind the dockyard.

Fab day out

The 166 makes a good half day out for anyone wanting to combine a bit of riverside Chatham with a wander in the woods behind it. Start at Chatham Waterfront Bus Station, where Stop A1 sits right beside the Medway, and use the journey as a way to see the inland side of the Medway towns that most visitors never reach.

Before you board, it is worth spending an hour at Chatham itself. The Historic Dockyard is a short walk or onward bus ride away and is one of the most complete Georgian and early Victorian dockyards in the world, with the submarine Ocelot, HMS Gannet and the Ropery all open to visit. Closer to the bus station, the Sun Pier and the Command of the Heights walk give views across to Rochester Castle and Cathedral.

As the bus climbs through Luton, look out for the old shop fronts along Luton Road and the Hen and Chickens, a long-standing local pub at the top of the hill. This is workaday Chatham, hilly and densely packed, with the kind of street-level character that disappears on the main roads.

Once the bus reaches Lordswood and Princes Park, the obvious place to break the journey is Capstone Farm Country Park, a short walk from the Kingfisher Drive and Princes Park stops. It is a generous expanse of meadow, lake and woodland with waymarked walks, a visitor centre and good views back over the Medway valley. Families often combine it with the play areas and open grass at Princes Park itself.

Continuing on through Walderslade, the route runs close to the edge of the Kent Downs National Landscape. Walks lead out from Lordswood and Bridgewood into the beech woods of Boxley Warren and along the North Downs Way, which crosses the ridge just to the south. For a shorter stroll, the woodland paths around Gleaming Wood Drive and Copper Tree Walk are quiet and well shaded in summer.

Back on the bus for the return loop, you descend through Luton again and finish at Chatham Railway Station, handy for trains on to Rochester for the cathedral, castle and Dickensian high street, or back into London. A final stop at the Waterfront leaves you well placed for a riverside pub or a meal at the Dockside Outlet before heading home.
