Kent Downs National Landscape, Kent

The Kent Downs National Landscape (formerly designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) protects a substantial portion of the chalk downland that characterises the north Kent landscape. Stretching from the Medway Valley in the north to the East Sussex border in the south, the landscape spans around 353 square kilometres of rolling hills, ancient beech woodlands, open grassland, and cultivated farmland. The distinctive white chalk of the escarpment forms dramatic ridges and viewpoints, particularly striking when viewed from the Medway Valley below.

The landscape is home to diverse wildlife, from rare chalk grassland plants to downland birds, deer, and numerous invertebrate species. Historic villages and farmsteads dot the countryside, many built from local chalk, and ancient field patterns reflect centuries of pastoral farming. For visitors based in or travelling through Medway via the 166 route, the Kent Downs form the dramatic backdrop to the south and east, rising sharply above the suburban areas. Walking trails across the downland offer sweeping views over the Medway, Essex, and beyond to the North Downs of Surrey. The area represents one of Kent's finest countryside treasures and a significant contrast to the industrialised Medway waterfront.
