About Whitstable Harbour
Whitstable Harbour is the focal point of the seaside town, a working harbour where fishing boats, leisure craft, and small commercial vessels operate alongside one another. The harbour has been central to Whitstable's economy and identity for centuries, originally as a major trading port and still today as a centre for fishing and water-based activity. The layout of the town grew around this working waterfront, and it remains the heart of the community.
The harbour is a lively place to visit, with boats moored at different levels depending on the tide, fishmongers and oyster establishments nearby, and a natural amphitheatre created by the slope of the beach and the curves of the harbour walls. You can watch the working activity of the harbour, walk around the waterfront paths, and understand how the town's character is fundamentally shaped by the sea. The oyster trade in particular is strongly associated with Whitstable, and evidence of this heritage is visible throughout the harbour area.
