White Cliffs of Dover

The White Cliffs of Dover are one of Britain's most recognisable natural landmarks. These chalk cliffs rise about 106 metres (350 feet) above the sea and stretch for several miles along the Kent coast. The brilliant white face of the cliffs, created by chalk deposits laid down millions of years ago, is visible from the French coast on clear days.

You can walk along the clifftop paths, which offer sweeping views across the English Channel. The main visitor area is at the Visitor Centre near Dover, where marked trails range from gentle 30-minute walks to longer circular routes through the surrounding countryside. The paths pass through grassland and chalk downland habitat, and on the clifftop itself you'll find information boards about the geology and history of the cliffs.

The cliffs have featured in literature, music and national identity for centuries. During the Second World War, the cliffs were used as an observation point and gun emplacement. Today they remain a symbol of England's separation from mainland Europe and are a key attraction on the Kent coast.
