Walmer Castle and Gardens

Walmer Castle sits a short distance south of Deal and shares the same Tudor origins as its better-known neighbour. Built by Henry VIII in 1540, it too was designed as an artillery fort with the characteristic flower-shaped bastions. However, Walmer was eventually converted into a residential palace rather than remaining a working military installation, and today it has a very different character from Deal.

The castle's grounds include substantial gardens developed over centuries, with lawns, shrub borders, and specimen trees providing a peaceful setting. Inside, the rooms are furnished as if inhabited, and displays explain the castle's history as the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Historic figures including William Pitt, the Duke of Wellington, and other notable wardens have lived here.

The combination of the fortress itself, the residential interiors, and the gardens makes Walmer a more elaborate visit than Deal. The gardens alone are worth exploring, and the juxtaposition of martial engineering with domestic comfort creates an unusual and absorbing atmosphere. Many visitors explore both castles in a day trip down the Kent coast.
