Vicarage Park

Vicarage Park is a small but much-loved public park tucked into the centre of Kendal, on the eastern bank of the River Kent. Created in the late 19th century on land formerly belonging to the parish vicarage, it sits within easy walking distance of Kendal Parish Church, the Abbot Hall art gallery and the busy shops of Stricklandgate.

The park is laid out around mature lime and beech trees, with sweeping lawns, formal flower beds and a traditional bandstand that still hosts occasional summer concerts. A war memorial stands near the entrance, and benches around the perimeter give views back across the river to the wooded slopes crowned by the ruins of Kendal Castle. Children's play equipment and open grass make it a popular spot with local families.

For visitors, Vicarage Park is a quiet pause in the middle of a town better known for its mint cake, its Lakeland gateway status and the Kendal Mountain Festival. It is only a few minutes on foot from Kendal railway station on the Windermere branch line, so makes an easy add-on to a day spent exploring the southern Lake District by public transport.
