Tipperary Castle

Tipperary, in the heart of Ireland's Golden Vale, has a long history of fortifications stretching back to the Norman period, when a motte and bailey castle was established in the town by Theobald Walter, founder of the Butler dynasty. The original timber stronghold guarded the crossing of the River Ara and gave Tipperary its early strategic importance as a market and garrison settlement.

Little of the medieval fabric survives above ground today, but the site sits within easy reach of Tipperary town's other heritage points, including the Excel Heritage Centre, the Charles Kickham statue on Main Street, and the old military barracks. Visitors interested in the broader story of castles in the region often combine a stop here with trips to nearby Cashel and Cahir, whose dramatic stone fortresses are among the best preserved in Ireland.
