St. Eunan's Cathedral

St Eunan's Cathedral stands on a commanding hilltop overlooking Letterkenny in County Donegal, its tall spire visible for miles across the surrounding countryside. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a Hiberno-Romanesque and Gothic Revival style, it is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raphoe and the only cathedral in the county. Dedicated to St Eunan (Adamnán), a 7th-century abbot of Iona and biographer of St Columba, the building reflects the deep Christian heritage of the region.

The exterior is built from local sandstone with a graceful spire rising more than 60 metres above the town. Inside, visitors encounter a richly decorated interior featuring intricate Celtic carvings, marble columns, mosaic flooring and a striking painted ceiling. The Stations of the Cross and the great rose window draw the eye, while panels around the nave depict scenes from the lives of Donegal saints, including Columba and Eunan himself.

The cathedral remains an active place of worship and a focal point of civic life in Letterkenny. Its hillside setting makes it a natural landmark for visitors arriving in the town, and it is within easy walking distance of Letterkenny's main street, museum and bus station.
