About Skiddaw, Keswick

Skiddaw is the northernmost of the Lake District's principal mountains, rising to 3,054 metres above Ordnance Datum. The fell dominates views from Bassenthwaite Lake and much of the northern approaches to the lakes, its distinctive conical profile recognisable from great distances. The mountain is formed primarily of Skiddaw slate, a metamorphic rock that creates steep, loose slopes particularly on the north-western face, with more tractable terrain available on the eastern side.

The mountain has attracted walkers and climbers since the early Romantic period, when fell-walking became fashionable among visitors to the Lake District. Multiple routes ascend from the valleys below, ranging from straightforward fell-walking routes from the Keswick side to more challenging scrambles via the northern approaches. The summit offers commanding views across the Lake District to the south and into Scotland to the north, with Bassenthwaite Lake dramatically displayed beneath.

Skiddaw is an iconic element of the Lake District landscape, both for its physical presence and for its cultural associations with Romantic poetry and the development of mountain tourism in England. For visitors on the Carlisle-Wigton-Keswick journey, the mountain provides both aesthetic focal point and recreational opportunity, whether as object of distant contemplation from the lake or as destination for serious fell-walking expeditions.
