Robert the Bruce's Battlefields

Although Robert the Bruce is most closely associated with battlefields in Scotland, the borderlands of Cumbria carry their own memory of the king's campaigns. Following his victory at Bannockburn in 1314, Bruce led repeated raids deep into northern England, with Cumbrian towns and abbeys bearing the brunt of his cross-border incursions throughout the 1310s and into the 1320s.

Carlisle, the great walled border city, withstood a determined siege by Bruce in the summer of 1315. The king's forces brought siege engines and attempted to undermine the walls, but heavy rain and a stout defence under Sir Andrew Harclay forced the Scots to withdraw. The castle and city walls still stand and remain the most tangible reminders of those events. Further south, Lanercost Priory, sheltered in the Irthing valley near Brampton, was raided and badly damaged by Scottish forces; its ruined nave and surviving church preserve the scars of the period.

A tour of the Cumbrian sites linked to Bruce's raids takes in open border country, fortified manors and religious houses, offering a quieter, more reflective counterpart to the famous battlefields north of the border. The landscape itself, with its drove roads and river crossings, helps explain how the raiders moved so freely through the north.
