Rheged

Rheged is a distinctive arts, retail and events centre on the edge of Penrith, set into the hillside at the gateway to the Lake District National Park. Named after the ancient Brythonic kingdom that once covered this part of north-west Britain, the building is largely covered in grass and wildflowers and is often described as one of the largest grass-roofed buildings in Europe, blending into the Cumbrian landscape rather than standing out from it.

Inside, a generous central atrium hosts a changing programme of art exhibitions, craft fairs and family events, while a cinema screens both mainstream releases and independent films and documentaries with a strong outdoor and landscape focus. Independent shops sell Cumbrian food and drink, books, outdoor gear, ceramics and gifts from local makers, and there is a sizeable café and restaurant serving regional produce.

For families, Rheged has indoor and outdoor play areas, and its location just off the M6 and A66 makes it a popular first or last stop for visitors travelling to and from the Lakes. Buses from Penrith town centre and the nearby railway station provide a practical car-free option, and the views east across the Eden valley to the Pennines are a bonus on any visit.
