About Salthill Promenade

Salthill Promenade is one of Galway's most loved landmarks, a two kilometre seafront walkway stretching along the northern shore of Galway Bay from the edge of the city out towards Blackrock Diving Tower. Known locally simply as 'the Prom', it has been a fixture of Galway life for well over a century, drawing walkers, joggers, swimmers and families out to enjoy panoramic views across the bay to the hills of County Clare and the Aran Islands beyond.

A long-standing tradition sees walkers 'kick the wall' at the Blackrock end before turning back, a quirky local custom said to bring good luck. The Blackrock Diving Tower itself is a magnet for year-round sea swimmers, with brave souls leaping into the Atlantic in every season. Along the route, visitors will find sandy beaches at Ladies Beach and Grattan Beach, traditional ice cream parlours, amusement arcades, and a string of cafes, pubs and restaurants in the Salthill village area.

The Prom is also home to Galway Atlantaquaria, Ireland's national aquarium, and offers some of the finest sunset views in the west of Ireland. Easily reached on foot from Galway city centre or by frequent local bus services along the seafront road, it remains an essential stop on any visit to the city.
