River Bure

The River Bure is one of Norfolk's longest and most important rivers, stretching roughly 30 miles from its source near Aylsham in the west to the North Sea coast at Yarmouth in the east. Within the Norfolk Broads, the Bure forms the main highway for both leisure boaters and traditional wherries, passing through some of the most scenic and wildlife-rich parts of the landscape.

The river winds through a patchwork of reed beds, grazing marshes, and wooded banks, creating a habitat for otters, water voles, marsh harriers, and bitterns. Access is excellent for both boaters and walkers: the towpath and riverside walks follow much of its length, and numerous boat hire centres, pubs, and stopping points dot the water. The journey from Potter Heigham northwestward towards Wroxham takes you through increasingly narrow and wild sections of the river, where trees overhang the water and bird watching becomes genuinely rewarding.

The Bure is navigable by small craft for much of its upper reaches, though in drier seasons some sections become shallow. Its low-arched bridges, including the famous Potter Heigham Bridge, add character and challenge to any water-based journey. The river's health and management is a focus for local conservation groups, as it remains central to the Broads' ecology and economy alike.
