The Fishermen's Hospital, Great Yarmouth

The Fishermen's Hospital sits on the north side of Great Yarmouth's Market Place, a set of single-storey almshouses arranged around a paved courtyard. It was founded in 1702 by the Corporation of Great Yarmouth to house 'decayed fishermen' of the town and their widows, and it still serves as almshouse accommodation today.

The buildings you'll see are Grade I listed and clearly of their period: a symmetrical range of Dutch-influenced brick cottages with steep tiled roofs and dormer windows, entered through a central pedimented archway. Above the arch sits a small clock cupola topped by a statue of St Peter, patron saint of fishermen, and inside the courtyard a figure of Charity looks out over the residents' gardens. The compact layout is one of the best-preserved examples of an early Georgian almshouse court in East Anglia.

As a working almshouse the interiors aren't open to the public, but the courtyard can usually be viewed from the archway and the exterior is easy to take in from the Market Place. It sits directly opposite the outdoor market and a short walk from the Minster of St Nicholas, so it fits neatly into a wider wander around the historic core of the town.
