About Mid-Norfolk Railway
The Mid-Norfolk Railway operates as a heritage railway, running on a section of the old Great Eastern Railway line that closed to passenger traffic in 1969. The railway runs between Dereham and Wymondham, a distance of about 10 miles, and operates seasonal services using preserved steam and diesel locomotives. The line passes through rural Norfolk countryside, giving passengers a flavour of travel in earlier eras.
Visitors can ride on vintage coaches pulled by heritage locomotives, with stops at stations including Yaxham and Thuxton. The railway preserves railway heritage through operation of restored rolling stock and locomotives, some dating back over a century. The stations themselves have been restored to evoke the appearance of rural railway halts from the early 20th century. The railway also hosts special events throughout the year, including dining trains and evening services.
The Mid-Norfolk Railway is a significant example of heritage railway preservation in East Anglia, operated by volunteers and offering both a recreational journey and a living museum of railway history. The route provides an accessible way for visitors to experience Norfolk's countryside and the railway heritage that once connected the county's communities.
