Lowry statue

The Lowry statue is a much-loved bronze sculpture commemorating the painter Laurence Stephen Lowry, whose distinctive industrial scenes and matchstick figures captured working life in the North West of England. Seated on a bench and gazing out at the view, the figure invites passers-by to pause and sit alongside him for a photograph, making it one of the most photographed pieces of public art in the area.

Lowry famously enjoyed visits to the Fylde coast and to Berwick-upon-Tweed, and statues in his memory have been placed in spots associated with his life and work. The sculpture captures him in his familiar overcoat and hat, sketchbook in hand, in the unassuming pose that suited a man known for his modesty as much as for his unique artistic vision.

Easy to find on foot during a stroll along the promenade, the statue is a natural stopping point on a wider walk that can take in nearby cafes, the seafront and views across the bay. It is a simple but evocative piece of public art that has become a small landmark in its own right.
