Lowestoft Railway Station

Lowestoft Railway Station is the eastern terminus of the East Suffolk Line and the most easterly station in the United Kingdom, sitting just a short walk from the harbour and the town's South Beach. The current building dates from 1855 and was designed by John Louth Clemence for the East Suffolk Railway, replacing an earlier terminus and marking the arrival of the railway that helped transform Lowestoft from a small fishing port into a busy Victorian resort.

The station front is a fine example of mid-Victorian brick railway architecture, with a symmetrical two-storey façade, tall arched windows and decorative brickwork picked out in cream and red. A large painted sign runs along the side wall facing the approach, spelling out LOWESTOFT in bold traditional lettering, a reminder of the era when station names were painted straight onto the masonry rather than mounted on modern signage. The overall roof spans the platforms and gives the concourse the enclosed, cavernous feel typical of a proper Victorian terminus.

Inside you'll find a compact ticket hall, a small café and access to four platforms used mainly by Greater Anglia services running to Ipswich via Beccles, and East Midlands Railway trains along the Wherry Lines to Norwich via Reedham. It's a practical starting point for exploring the seafront, Ness Point and the Broads, and the building itself is worth pausing to look at before you set off.
