About this attraction

About Gulliver Wind Turbine and Ness Point, Lowestoft

Ness Point in Lowestoft is the most easterly point on the British mainland, the first patch of the country to catch the sunrise each morning. The spot itself is unassuming: a working stretch of harbour wall on the industrial edge of town, marked by the Euroscope, a large circular compass set into the ground showing bearings and distances to landmarks around the world, from Land's End to St Petersburg.

Towering behind it is Gulliver, one of the tallest onshore wind turbines in the UK when it was commissioned in 2005. Standing 126 metres to the tip of its blades, Gulliver was built to supply power to the SLP Engineering yard and remains a striking marker on the Lowestoft skyline. Its scale is best appreciated from directly beneath, where the slow sweep of the rotors is genuinely impressive.

The location has none of the polish of a traditional viewpoint, but that is part of the appeal. You can watch container ships and fishing boats work the North Sea, follow the Suffolk coast southwards, and tick off a genuine geographical extremity. Combine it with a walk along the seafront to Lowestoft's sandy beaches, or head north to the Euroscope's twin marker at Ness Point Gardens.
