Lowestoft Lighthouse

Lowestoft Lighthouse stands on the cliffs at the northern edge of the town, guiding shipping past the sandbanks off the Suffolk coast. A light has been maintained on this site since 1609, when Trinity House established one of the first coastal lighthouses in England here. The present white circular tower, built in 1874, rises around 16 metres and sits roughly 37 metres above sea level, giving its beam a range of some 23 nautical miles.

The lighthouse is fully automated and operated by Trinity House, so the interior is not routinely open to the public, but the setting is the real draw. The clifftop path passes directly beside the tower, with wide views over the North Sea, Lowestoft Ness and the harbour approaches. Interpretation boards explain the site's long maritime history, including its role in warning vessels away from the treacherous Holm and Newcome sands offshore.

The lighthouse is a short walk from the town centre and pairs well with a visit to Ness Point, the most easterly spot in the British Isles, just to the south. It sits within the Lowestoft North Denes conservation area, and the surrounding cliff gardens are a pleasant place to pause and watch the shipping traffic heading in and out of the port.
