About Kent Cricket Ground (St Lawrence Ground), Canterbury
The St Lawrence Ground, officially known as the Spitfire Ground, is the home of Kent County Cricket Club and one of the oldest first-class cricket venues in England. Located on Old Dover Road in Canterbury, the ground has hosted county cricket since 1847 and remains the club's principal fixture venue, staging County Championship, One-Day Cup and T20 Blast matches through the summer season.
The ground is best known for Canterbury Cricket Week, held every August, which is the oldest cricket festival in the world and dates back to 1842. Traditionally the ground was famous for the lime tree that stood inside the boundary rope, a unique feature in first-class cricket until it fell in a storm in 2005; a replacement lime has since been planted just outside the playing area. The pavilion, the Frank Woolley Stand and the Colin Cowdrey Stand commemorate two of Kent's most celebrated players.
On a matchday visitors can watch a full day's play from the terraces or grass banks, browse the club shop, and enjoy the relaxed, tree-lined setting on the edge of the city. The ground is a short bus ride from Canterbury city centre on Old Dover Road, and match tickets are usually available on the gate for county fixtures.
