About Haworth Art Gallery
Haworth Art Gallery is a cultural gem located in Accrington, Lancashire. Set within a picturesque 9-acre park, the gallery is housed in a beautiful Tudor-style mansion built in 1909. Originally the home of William Haworth, a local manufacturer, the property was gifted to the town upon his death, and it opened as a public art gallery in 1921. Today, it is one of Accrington’s most cherished landmarks, offering a rich combination of art, architecture, and history.
The gallery is best known for housing Europe’s largest public collection of Tiffany glass, donated by Joseph Briggs, a local man who emigrated to the United States and worked closely with Louis Comfort Tiffany. The collection includes stunning stained-glass windows, intricate lamps, vases, mosaics, and pieces of decorative glasswork, all showcasing the vibrant colours and exquisite craftsmanship that made Tiffany Studios world-famous.
Beyond the Tiffany collection, the gallery also features a range of fine and decorative arts, including 19th and 20th-century paintings, ceramics, and textiles. Exhibitions often change, offering both contemporary and historical displays that celebrate local talent as well as nationally recognised artists.
The building itself is a highlight, with original wood paneling, stained-glass windows, and elegant architectural details preserved throughout. Visitors can explore the various rooms, which retain the feel of a grand Edwardian home, adding to the intimate and atmospheric experience of the gallery.
Outside, the surrounding parkland provides an ideal space for walks, picnics, and family outings. The landscaped gardens, mature trees, and seasonal flowerbeds create a tranquil setting that complements the artistic beauty inside. A small café and gift shop offer refreshments and souvenirs, making it easy to spend a relaxed afternoon enjoying both culture and nature.
