Enniskillen Castle Museum

Enniskillen Castle Museum occupies a striking lakeside fortress on the banks of the River Erne, in the centre of Enniskillen town. Built in the early fifteenth century by the Gaelic Maguire chieftains who controlled Lough Erne, it later became a Plantation stronghold under William Cole, who added the distinctive twin-turreted Watergate that still rises above the water and serves as one of Fermanagh's most photographed landmarks.

The castle complex is now home to two museums under one roof. The Fermanagh County Museum tells the story of the county from prehistoric times, with displays on the early Christian monasteries of Lough Erne, Gaelic Ireland, the Plantation, and rural life. The Inniskillings Museum, meanwhile, covers the long history of the two famous regiments raised at Enniskillen in 1689, with uniforms, medals, weapons and personal stories from campaigns ranging from Waterloo to the World Wars.

Visitors can explore the keep, walk the ramparts for views across the lough, and follow the heritage trail around the castle yard. There is a cafe and shop on site, and the castle sits within easy walking distance of Enniskillen's bus station and town centre.
