Ennis Friary

Ennis Friary sits in the centre of Ennis, the county town of Clare, just a short stroll from the bustling shops and pubs of Abbey Street. Founded in the 1240s by Donnchadh Cairbreach O'Brien, King of Thomond, it was for centuries one of the most important Franciscan houses in Ireland and a renowned centre of learning, said to have attracted hundreds of students at its medieval peak.

The roofless church and cloister, now cared for by the Office of Public Works, are celebrated for their exceptional medieval stone carving. Highlights include the elaborate MacMahon tomb with its scenes from the Passion of Christ, a carved figure of St Francis displaying the stigmata, and a vivid Ecce Homo panel. The slender bell tower and graceful east window give a clear sense of the friary's former grandeur.

An on-site exhibition and small visitor centre help interpret the carvings and tell the story of the Franciscans in Thomond, from their arrival under the O'Briens through the suppression of the monasteries and the long years of Penal Laws. The friary is an easy and rewarding stop for anyone exploring Ennis on foot.
